What they don’t tell you about college…

I have seen several Youtubers make videos with this exact title. I thought this topic was interesting, and since most people that read my blog are either in college or high school, I thought it was appropriate to write about. So, here is my take on it.

College is truly the most amazing time in your life. My dad always told me that growing up, but I never believed him. Now, I love college, however; there are some things that I didn’t know about college, until I was in college. College is a wonderful time full of growth, learning, and failures.

Tip No. 1: Always rent your textbooks when you can because it saves money. You can also try to find other people that already taken the class and you can purchase their book. This saves money because books and access codes are expensive.

Tip No. 2: C’s may get degrees, but some majors require a certain GPA. At least at my school, most students enter as a pre-major and have to meet certain requirements to be officially admitted into the major. This can be extremely stressful for some students. So make sure you know what your requirements are and be sure that you are meeting them before it’s too late.

Dilemma: I know this topic is talked about often, but many students change their majors. I know I have thought about it. Many of my friends have changed their majors, and others think about it. I don’t understand how at 18 years old we are supposed to have our whole life planned out and know what we want to do. Sometimes classes can change our minds. I know I’ve been thinking about changing my major and minor because so many subjects fascinate me. Also, many people end up doing something completely different than what they majored in college.

Frustration: Getting a job on campus is much harder than you think. I have been trying to get a job on campus, and even in the campus area, and I have not been successful. Some people may get lucky, but me and my roommates have been on a constant hunt. My roommate recently got a job after two and a half years of trying to find one. This is not an easy task. What most people don’t know is that most job are work-study programs and that leaves many students out.

Change: College will change your perspective on many things. For example, growing up I always told everyone that I would never be in a sorority, yet I’m in one now!

Growth: You will grow into a different person, whether you know it or not. College changes everyone, sometimes for better, and some learn hard lessons. You will realize who your true friends are. You may have your friends from home, since you were five, but I've learned that how long you've known someone doesn’t matter if they don’t make an effort. Your college friends become your family because they are all you have. They are with you every day and see you at your best and worst. I truly believe that no one fully understands the bond between sorority sisters, fraternity brothers, and roommates, until you have them in your life. It’s almost as if you have known them your whole life because they mean the absolute world to you. I know that when I left for college, I didn’t think I would ever find friends like my friends from home, but I did. I found my family away from home.

Peace: You will eventually not feel homesick at all because school becomes your new home. I personally never thought I would call Southern California my home, but it is. I always thought I would be homesick and miss my friends and family, but I don’t anymore. I found my new home, and I’m very happy there. I know my parents always joke with me that I call Southern California my home, but it’s true. So thank you college, for changing my life for the better.

Forever Always,

Emily
