The best places to thrift in San Francisco

I’ve been living in San Francisco for a little over two years. It wasn’t until recently that I got super into thrifting and discount shopping. I go almost every week now. Thrifting is like a fun hobby for me. I love finding treasures buried in racks. It’s kind of a thrill for me. I think it would be cool to start a business and maybe even do some thrift flipping. I’m now on the hunt to find the best places to thrift in the city. Here are some of my current favorite spots:

Stores

There are so many cool places to shop in San Francisco when it comes to thrifting, but here are some of my go-to places.

SoSo Supermarket - Haight Street

This store is so cool. It’s in the heart of the Haight Ashbury neighborhood. They have cool finds and switch out their vendors every month. That means there is always something new to find! They also carry local small businesses too.

Buffalo Exchange - Haight Street

I’ve bought several pieces from the Buffalo Exchange on Haight. I’ve bought several jackets and a cool San Francisco shirt. They have clothes for men and women.

Wasteland - Haight Street

Wasteland sells higher-end and designer pieces. You can find some cool pieces, but be ready to pay the price. They have clothes for both women and men.

GoodWill - West Portal

The GoodWill on West Portal is great. They tend to carry higher-end items. I once bought a cropped Urban Outfitters sweater that was normally $60 for $15 with the tags still on it. It was brand new, and it was such a steal.

Crossroads - Irving

This one is for my Inner/Outer Sunset girls. Crossroads is a great place to find some higher-end pieces. For example, I got a Wilfred satin dress for $28.

Cary Lane - They have three locations, but I go to the one on 9th

Cary Lane isn’t exactly thrifting, but they sell designer brands at discounted prices due to overstock, last season pieces, and samples. It’s a great place to find quality jackets and closet staples.

Moody Goose Vintage - Polk Street

I actually have never been to their actual store, but I have bought things from them from the West Coast Craft fair and Secondhand Saturdays. They have great stuff. I highly recommend it. I hope to make it to their actual store eventually.

Events/Neighborhoods

Another great way besides actual store fronts for thrifting in the city is to go to markets, events, and festivals. There are some almost every single weekend in San Francisco. The best way to keep up with events is to follow different neighborhood farmers markets, merchant associations, and other small businesses to keep up with the different events. Here are some accounts to follow on Instagram that will help you find the different events and markets where you can thrift at.

They host lots of events in the Inner and Outer Sunset districts. They also post about other events happening in the city. I highly recommend following them!

Secondhand Saturdays - Sunset Mercantile

I love going to Secondhand Saturdays. I always find such cool things. They only have one left for the season in November, so don’t miss out.

Inner Sunset Flea - Sunset Mercantile

The Inner Sunset Flea market happens on the second Sunday of every month from April - November. It’s small, but you can get some good finds.

This Instagram account is dedicated to the Lower Haight neighborhood. They post about all things Haight! The Haight/Ashbury neighborhood has so many awesome thrift stores, so this account is the perfect place to keep updated on all the events happening in the area.

Small Businesses/Vendors/Sellers

This list includes some of my favorite small businesses, vendors, or sellers that I find at different events in the city.

I’m still on the hunt for more places. I might do an updated post in a couple of months. And who knows, maybe I’ll start a business or something, so stay tuned for updates.

Forever Always,

Emily
